Your support of the Howard Feinstein Fund helps young Jewish teens become proud of their heritage, and allows them to experience the beauty of Judaism in a safe and wholesome summer environment.
Howard Feinstein (April 11, 1943-May 16, 2014) was a mensch: a special man who treated everyone—including his employees—as equal. He was quick to greet you with a friendly smile that made you instantly feel at ease. People turned to Howard for advice. He never saw himself as greater than another human being, even those many years younger than he.
As a young teenager, Howard had spent three summers at as a camper at the Knights of Pythias Camp in upstate New York. He subsequently returned as a counselor for four additional summers. Howard had a wonderful time as a counselor and was dearly loved by the campers who would call him “Uncle Howie.” For the rest of his life, he would tell and retell the life lessons that he had learned there—particularly the importance of treating all people as equals, no matter what their background or race.
Howard truly loved the work of the Gan Israel Teen Camp. He loved the fact that this was a place where Jewish teens could spend a summer in a Jewish environment in a non-judgmental way. His philanthropy insured that no camper would be turned away from camp due to financial difficulty. Howard took a personal interest in helping the camp to grow. With his guidance, the Travel Program expanded in three short years from a Midwestern camp into a nationally recognized camp hosting teenagers from everywhere in the United States, from Canada and from even as far away as Germany.
The Howard Feinstein Fund is dedicated to Howard’s everlasting memory. It is meant to insure that underprivileged Jewish teens, regardless of their background or affiliation, have the ability to participate in a summer camp experience and thereby have the same kind of memories, and learn the same kind of values, that Howard treasured throughout his lifetime.
